Tempie is working now, and she's doing so great. I've finally managed to get the weight back on her that she lost when she got poisoned, and she's just about back to her old self again. Boone is shaping up to be a really nice working dog. We were at a fundraiser yesterday, and he was absolutely perfect. He greeted the natives, became a crowd favorite, held some really long downstays while I helped serve food, and just behaved so well the whole time. I was really quite proud of him. And Raja has really settled down since she turned three. She's still a blast to be around, but she is a bit easier to live with now. I just got back from dog and house sitting for the past couple of weeks, too. He's currently working on play dead, roll over, and take a bow.

And as for Little Miss Temporary, we're still making progress. We just have to take it slow. She hasn't shown any signs of aggression in a good while, and she is starting to open back up to people. She even let one of my team members rub her belly the other day. For those fans still rooting for Tempie, here's a quick shot of her, sulking because she missed out on the dog park.

Thanks again for all the kind comments, messages, and emails that I am still receiving. The support for my lil yella dog is both astounding and heartwarming.

Return of the Queen

Just a quick update on the Temporary dog. Since Tempie did so good in Chicago, we decided it was time for her to return to SAR practice. I hadn't worked her since early November, so I was prepared for her to look at me like I was an idiot when I gave her the command to search. But boy, was I ever wrong! Not only did she find all the body parts out there, but she was super fast. And she was so happy doing it! Her whole body wiggled, and she hopped from place to place as she worked. When she got to the last one, she gave this ridiculously joyous leap into the air and plopped down into her alert with a big grin. I am so happy that she can get back to doing what she loves.

On a side note, Boone is getting so big! And he is coming along really nicely with HRD work. I didn't work him on Sunday with Tempie because it was 35 degrees and pouring rain, but he's making a lot of progress.

Can't wait until he can wear this for real:

The Windy City

I took the three mutts on a journey across the country to visit a good friend in Chicago. Getting out of Texas took half the trip, then it was smooth sailing. I love that my dogs travel so well. They slept the entire way there and the entire way back. Even the puppy. I was worried what Tempie would do when we got there. I was prepared to crate her the entire time and only let her out by myself. But she walked in and acted like she had spent her entire life in that house and it was perfectly normal for her to love everyone. I'd say this is a pretty huge step in her progress.

Between my friend and I, there were six dogs in the house. It sounds like it would be chaotic, especially when none of the dogs had met each other before, but everything went really smoothly. Except for the snow... I had never seen snow before. It was fun. It was beautiful. But mainly, it was awful! I hate the cold. And Boone agreed with me. He spent most of the time huddled in my jacket.

The girls, on the other hand, took to the snow like they were made for it. Of course, Raja really was, I suppose. And you can tell! She looked beautiful in it, and she had a blast. She and my friend's Koolie were completely in love with each other.

I just got home last night, and I miss them already.

A New Day

Apologies for not updating sooner! I've had a lot on my plate. Thank y'all for the kind thoughts and support. Tempie shall make an appearance to let everyone know she is alive and well! ...Ignore the poor, mauled Shrek. Apparently, Raja likes the taste of ogre brains.

Healthwise, Tempie is doing so much better. Unfortunately, she has been left with some rather serious fear aggression issues. She no longer has any love for the human race (who can blame her), and she is not afraid to let everyone know exactly how she feels. We are taking it one day at a time, moving step by very slow step, and trying to remind her that not everyone is a complete jerkface. She has a strong heart, so I'm sure she will come around with a little patience and a lot of TLC.

On a side note, we may have a new addition to the furry crew. A very kind breeder offered to donate one of his pups to me, so long as I train it for SAR. After much tossing and turning, I've decided I can take on another project without cutting into time spent working with Tempie. I knew all along I wanted to get another search dog, to start one from the beginning. I was hoping to get Tempie certified first, but this opportunity is too good to pass up. Four of the dogs on my search team are from this breeder. All of his dogs show a remarkable talent for this line of work. So, cross your fingers and send some good vibes that all will go well.

Also, not to end on a sour note... But no news yet on the four men that broke in. You'd think with a witness, a camera, fingerprints, and possibly DNA, we might have a pretty good shot at catching them. But so far, it's not looking good.

I Feel So Violated

Sorry I've not been keeping up with the blog! We've had some drama, and you know how that is. Someone broke into my house and stole all my stuff. Worst of all, they fed Tempie some kind of poison. Fortunately, they fed it to her with chicken, so she threw it up before much of it could be absorbed. Yay for a chicken intolerance! She's very sick, but she's going to be okay. They also roughed her up a bit, but nothing is broken! Unfortunately, she's really freaked out. She's not too pleased with people right now. (Neither am I.) With the exception of myself, no one is allowed near her. I hope she gets over it soon, though, because snarling just does not suit my lil yella dog.

NASDN Seminar

Well, we just got back from Nebraska! We had a pretty good time, but it's good to be home. While we were there, we got to deal with all kinds of exciting things. A belligerent, pigheaded trainer who was more interested in stirring up trouble than actually training was one. The others included a suspension bridge, the CGC exam, mystery meat that most people spit out or refused to eat, a crazy auction that had everyone rolling on the floor laughing, and so much more! Tempie now has her CGC, which I am very proud of. She flew right through it with only one mistake. When the lady testing us bent down to groom Tempie, she gave her a big slobbery kiss. Apparently, that was not fail-worthy, so we just have to mail in our results and wait on her certificate. Raja was quite pleased to have us home. She spent the first hour in my lap, flat out refusing to budge. She is now letting me walk around, but I'm not allowed to leave the room without her.

Search #4

Another real search today! Took us about an hour to get there, an hour to start, and a whole five minutes to find what we were looking for... Everyone was great today, and I was lucky enough to be paired with the handler that made the find. Very cool stuff!

Also, we've moved out of the country, which is why I've not been able to update lately. The girls have taken to city life just fine, though they do miss having a yard of their own. One good thing is that we live right behind a fire station! Tempie and I will start training with them next week. Everyone seems very nice, but we've only met about half of them so far. We will also be making more trips to stores and whatnot to keep working on Tempie's fear of slick floors. I'm determined to get her over this! It's been the one major problem we've faced with her training. She completely freezes when she encounters slick floors. I'm sure we'll get past it, though. It's always nice to know that Tempie's fans are enjoying following along with her training. This award requires that I list seven things about myself, so here goes!

1. I hate the cold. I live in Texas for a reason. Anything below 70 is jacket weather and anything below 60 is absolute misery.

2. Every time one of my nieces was born, I made up a little song with their name in it. Whenever they stay over, I still sing them to sleep with their songs.

3. Water is gross. Juice FTW!

4. Most of my wardrobe is made up of hand-me-downs and free shirts from giving blood because I hate shopping.

5. When my dogs don't sleep with me, I sleep with a teddy bear.

6. I absolutely hate glitter. As in it makes me cringe to even write about it.

7. I've established a reputation for being surly, and I like it that way. But to those few who are crazy enough to stick around, I am fiercely loyal.

Now, I am passing on my award to three of my favorite blogs. *drumroll*

Marge Blog For being made of awesome and having just about the cutest dog in the world! We started with something pretty easy, though Tempie'd never seen either of these bones before. There was a skull and a femur bone, and both were in plain view. She worked quickly and gave strong alerts, so we left the baby stuff behind and went to work on something a lot harder, a blind search in the woods. There were two out there, both pour outs. How long did it take Tempie to find them? TWO MINUTES! That's it! As soon as the command was given, she took off and hit the first one within thirty seconds, gave a solid alert, waited for the command to find more, and took off again. I was a bit worried that she was moving too fast and would miss it, but I figured I'd let her run to the end of the grid and call her back if she didn't hit on anything. No need, though. She skidded to a stop, slammed her butt to the ground, and looked at me with a huge grin. The woman who set it up told me later that Tempie was pretty much on top of the source each time she alerted. All that work on getting her as close to the source as possible has really paid off. She definitely earned her dinner tonight, not to mention a bully stick AND a lamb femur.

A Job Well Done

I had my third search today! It was awesome. Half of the team went out on boats to check the alligator-inhabited pond. The other half, including me, got to check a "wooded area," which translates into a section of forest that was completely overgrown, making it necessary to cut our way through it. I got to break trail for Nicholas the Springer Spaniel, who I just so happen to completely adore. During the search, I earned some scratched up arms and a cut over my eye, not to mention some very tattered clothes, but it was a good day. I congratulate the dogs on my team for a job very well done. When I left this morning, Tempie saw me putting on all my gear, and she was very disappointed that she was not allowed to go with me, so I took her to The Yellow Retriever Pub & Grill after I got back, where her fans fawned all over her and made her sorrows a thing of the past.

This just in...

Tempie has a twin! On our way home, we stopped off at The Yellow Retriever Pub & Grill for the best burger in the world, and the staff fawned all over her and pointed a fan directly at "the poor baby" so she wouldn't get too hot. Haha, they sure know how to work us dog people. They've earned themselves a loyal customer for life! Tempie has definitely had her fill of attention and praise today, not to mention the massive amount of treats she ingested. She had me a little worried, I'll admit. Her first run out there was awful. But she turned right around and worked wonderfully for me. She even alerted in a small, unsteady boat in a pond with an alligator that I'm pretty sure would have swallowed Tempie whole given the chance. Tempie had never done any water work before, and keep in mind Tempie has only been training for 3-4 months! I didn't have much time for training today, so I just did something quick and somewhat easy. I haven't been hanging the source enough, so I thought I would try that. In fact, I had my first callout today. I am exhausted, covered in mud, half-drowned from wading around in swamp water, scratched up and bleeding everywhere, and still sooooo excited! I came home and worked Tempie with renewed enthusiasm, which definitely had a nice effect on her performance. She wasn't flawless, but she had awesome drive and worked really hard for me. If you are unfamiliar with raw feeding, you can find some good basics at my coworker's blog, specifically this page. My cats are typically fed ground meat for my convenience, but I do like to give them the occasional parts and pieces to keep their teeth clean. Most people say they have a hard time getting cats to eat whole parts, but I guess I'm lucky. I've never had a problem with it. I can put a whole quail down for my older cat, but I cut one up for the kitten.

Conan the Barbarian says "NOM NOM NOM"

Sairi the Siamese made a brief appearance, and I was lucky enough to get a picture. She's just about back to where she was before my stupid mistake. She did so great at training today! I took her out and let her off her leash, and I stayed put. I knew I would just have to let her go and trust her one of these days, and today was that day. I stood there, gave her the command, and watched her work beautifully for me. She already had the scent before I could even tell her to work, so she was ready and took off straight for it. She did try to pick it up and bring it to me, which we still need to work on, but I didn't correct her. I just told her to show me where it was, which made her drop it and alert correctly. She hit it with her nose, sat right down beside it, and stayed there until I made it over to her. Such a good girl! Then we moved on to the next task, which I had my doubts about. This one was set up on top of a pipe almost up to my shoulders, and I haven't worked her on anything up above her head since the brain matter failure a while back. But she didn't have any trouble with it! As soon as I gave her the command, she ran straight to it, walked around it twice, then jumped up and touched it with her nose and sat down with a big grin. Silly me for doubting her. The last bit was not quite as good. It was a blind search, which we just weren't ready for, and they were scents she had never worked with before. She showed interest in the right spots, but she didn't alert and she was not as focused as I would have liked. So I walked her through it again and had her alert on each spot, then we went back and ran through the first two tasks again so she could end on a good note. I was very proud of her today.

HRD Seminar 2010

Tempie and I just got back from a three day search and recovery seminar. It was fantastic! We got so much done. I got a bloodborne pathogens certification in addition to my certificate of completion for the seminar itself, which is a great addition to my resume. Tempie got a lot of training time in, despite being rather accident-prone this weekend. My roommate fed her a piece of chicken the first night, unaware of her chicken intolerance, so she was sick the rest of the weekend. And then Tempie hurt herself on the second morning and was unable to give her alert for the rest of the day. We still got to do a lot of neat stuff, though. She got her first boat ride, and she did awesome with that. She hopped in all by herself with very little encouragement and acted like she had been riding in boats her entire life. One day, I will get her water certified...but we've got to finish land first.

Yesterday was a blast! We went out on a mock search in the pouring rain while the temperature was just above freezing and the wind was blowing us all over the place. Fun stuff. No, it really was fun. I went as a flanker the first time and got to watch the dog I was paired with find just about everything they put out there all by himself. He was awesome! Later, I took Tempie out there. We did not do so good on that one. Tempie had a very hard time concentrating, so I didn't work her too hard. She showed me some of the scent articles, but I had to show her a couple of them. So we went back and worked on some basic stuff to end on a good note. Overall, we had a really good time at the seminar. And I ended up with a very tired dog.

Poor Raja

Since there were no new tricks for the competition this week, I decided to show poor Raja some love. I worked Tempie a little at home like we usually do, and she was terrible! Sometimes I forget she's so young. I get carried away because she works so hard for me, and I push her. So she reminded me that sometimes, kids need to just take a break and have fun. We've backed off on it a bit and haven't searched for anything this week, and we will resume our training tomorrow but with only short, easy sessions. Instead, we have been practicing some fun tricks like Crawl. Nothing fancy, just stuff she already knew. Here's a little sample:

And here is what we posted for the 101+ Dog Trick Challenge this week:

My Dog Is Smarter Than Me

I've known this for a long while, but I forget sometimes. Today was Tempie's third Search and Recovery session. She did very good, despite the crummy weather! She gave me a few solid alerts without any prompting from me, which is a huge step. She worked the cones and didn't give me any false alerts, though she did miss one of the scent articles. It was a small bone, which is hard to smell when it's raining, so I wasn't too worried about it. I just showed it to her and got her to touch it and alert. Then we moved on to searching for brain matter that was raised up above her head, hanging from a tree limb. This did not go as well. She didn't even stop. I took it down and put it on the ground, and she still didn't pay it any attention. It's quite a bit different from the few smells I've worked her on, so I wasn't really surprised.

Now on to my mistake... I had someone throw a scent article out into the woods to make sure she wasn't just tracking us. It was a tube filled with some kind of smelly goodness, though I don't remember what. Well, she went right to it. No problem. While I was giving her a break and rewarding her with a good game of fetch, I thought they were taking the tube back out to some secret hiding spot. What I didn't know was that they switched to a towel of some sort with blood on it. They took that out and buried it in the mud and leaves. So fast forward a bit. Tempie is done with fetch and ready to get back to work. I take her out, they tell me a basic area to search, and I set her loose. It only takes her about a minute to get the scent, and she goes straight to where they buried it. What do I do? I see her alerting to what is obviously not the tube, and I correct her! Did I check with them first to make sure it was the tube that they hid? No. My dog did her job and found what she was supposed to, and I told her it was wrong. When am I going to learn to trust my dog? Fortunately, she didn't let this bother her too much. We went back to the cones and ended on a good note.

Also, we are doing good with the 101+ Dog Trick Challenge. Tempie learned "Paw, Other Paw" and "Roll Over" this week. We had a bit of trouble with rolling over. She was not eager to learn that one, and I had to switch from shaping to luring. But she finally figured it out, just in time to post a video. Way to go, Tempie! Here are the videos that we submitted:

Paw, Other Paw

Roll Over & Other Way

Dead Bodies And Valentine's Day

Search and Recovery, Lesson Two

Well, Tempie had her good moments and bad moments today. She went straight to her first scent article and looked at me like, "Okay, that was easy. Now what?" I'm just beginning to teach her to sit once she finds it, and she hasn't quite grasped the concept yet. But she knows that when she finds that lovely smell of corpses, she wins. Only problem is, this was her first time trying to do that with about twelve other dogs running around like crazy and a ton of people looming over her. She does not yet understand the difference between work time and play time, and she has never been a big fan of strangers crowding around her. I think we just expected too much of her. She has only been training for a week, and they piled on the distractions this time.

All in all, I am pleased with her progress. She is aware of the smell she needs to be looking for, and she realizes that she will receive massive amounts of praise and treats if she finds it. So she's on the right track. And she sure did have fun. After working, she got to run all through the woods, up and down steep hills, through the creek, and into the massive pond. She also got to try out a very cool obstacle course with mixed success. Now, she is curled up under my chair, snoring like a drunken sailor.

Introducing The Heathens

<align=center>These two mutts are the reason I've gone a tad bit crazy. First off, we have Tempie!

</align=center>
<align=center></align=center><align=center>
Her original name was Temporary because that's what she was supposed to be. After having her for over a year, I'll admit Permie would probably be a better name for her, but Tempie stuck. She is the bringer of happiness in my house. She's always wearing a big goofy grin, and you can't look at her for long without smiling. Tempie is just starting her training as a cadaver dog, and she's coming along quite nicely. We've also just started following along with a friend's blog, 101+ Dog Tricks Challenge. Hopefully, this will help me to be more diligent with her obedience training. I'm ashamed to say I've been a bit lazy lately.

And then we have Raja.

</align=center><align=center>
She's...special. This little maniac is the most stubborn dog I've ever dealt with, and she is the bringer of chaos in my house. She's very interested in doing what she wants to do, and she really doesn't care what I have to say about it. And you know what? I love her for being her pain-in-the-butt self. She has earned a special place in my heart for not giving a flying flip what anyone else does or thinks about her. Though she can be a bit trying at times, she's relatively harmless. The worst she will do is bruise you when she runs full blast straight into the back of your legs. My advice? Don't get near any bodies of water unless you are prepared to go in.
</align>
